Telling your story

If you’re hear reading this then you must be curious about sharing your own tale from the universe of Star Trek, and that automatically excites us. Through creative works from collaborators across the globe, we keep this rich and diverse universe we love alive. We cannot wait to hear your story.

While we encourage everyone to explore their own voice and creativity, we do have some submission criteria listed below to set the standard for what is published on Trekkie Fan Fiction. Take a read and then follow the form to submit your own works and we will happily review it for potential publishing through this site.

Message from the Trekkie Fan Fiction Founder

Keep it family friendly

In keeping with Gene Roddenberry’s original vision of Star Trek, my intension is to keep the content of Trekkie Fan Fiction family friendly. As a kid, I remember watching Star Trek on Saturday mornings and being enthralled by the stories of people and their adventures on other worlds and dealing with and experiencing the cultures of others. They were able to do this without undue swearing or gratuitous sex or violence. So, please keep these notions in mind when submitting your work for publication.

I look forward to reviewing your submission. Please be advised that I may make suggestions on how you can improve your layout and/or punctuation/spelling mistakes to assist in delivering to our standard. Please see these as merely suggestions, as ultimately these pieces are your work, not mine, and they should reflect your ideas.

If you’d like help editing

Trekkie Fan Fiction is a labour of love for me, and I wish to continue my own works of fiction, my time is limited. However if you do need assistance on your own story either in editing or formatting, I can do so for a modest fee.

Costs for editing are: short stories: $20AUS. Novellas: $40AUS. Novels: $60AUS. Payment can me made via bank transfer or Paypal.

Rejected Submissions

While I would love to see every story published onto our website, we want to maintain a certain standard and quality that our readers expect. So if your submission doesn’t get accepted, don’t be discouraged and keep learning and pushing yourself.

Requirements and Preferences

Copyright

  • Include a standard copyright on your PDF with your name, year of writing, and copyright symbol. e.g. yourname 20xx ©
  • If you include any images including a book cover, include the respective copyright holders on a credits page.

Book Covers

  • You will see many of the stories on the website have book covers. While it is not a requirement it is definitely preferred, as it helps your story stand out and be recognisable.
  • There are plenty of great images to draw from online but please respect others’ copyright. NASA has made a number of their images free online that you could use as a basis, and online programs like canva allow you to do image editing to create something. Otherwise we can link you to a number of individuals we have sourced other cover designs from.

Formats

On Trekkie Fan Fiction, we have four specific formats we publish stories in, with a requirement of publishing with at least one of the most commonly used ebook formats: ePub, PDF and AZW (for Kindle).

PDF

In your word processor, format the page for A6 in size and reduce your margins to 0.2cm. Try to use a reading friendly font like Arial or Times New Roman with a size about 11-12pt. Output your Word doc as a PDF using a PDF printer program, or if you’re using Apache OpenOffice Writer, simply press the PDF button. We recommend using OpenOffice rather than Word as PDFs output from Word often don’t format properly.

ePub

The most cost-effective way to publish for epub is through using Apache OpenOffice Writer with a nifty ePub converter add-on that you can find here. Once installed, you’ll find 3 new icons on your screen. They’re fairly easy to operate. Just remember to add your name, title and whether there’s a cover to the doc. Also, the converter will create a Table of Contents if you’ve highlighted your Chapters by marking each one as a Heading. Once you’ve done all this the converter will punch out an ePub file in the same directory as the original with the same name, simply with an .epub extension.

Kindle

If you want to go the extra mile, there’s simple formula for creating Kindle files.
Download Calibre, it’s free, and drop your ePub book into the program, either by dragging the file into it, or by pressing the “Add Books” button at the top. Once you’ve done this, and your book is highlighted, you can add Metadata by clicking on the button and even adding, or changing, the cover. You can add tags, which I highly recommend, and publishing information.
Don’t forget to click “OK”. Then you can “Convert Books” to multiple formats, but for our purposes please check .awz3 as that is the Kindle format we use on TFF. Then you can find your modified files on your hard drive, after you’ve clicked “OK” again, by clicking – Path “Click to Open” on the lower right-hand side of the home screen of the program.

MP3s

MP3s are for hard-core people like me who don’t mind the sound of their own voice and are willing to spend quite some time with a decent computer, a copy of Audacity (which can be found freely online), a good headset, and some peace and quiet. If you have the time to sit and read your own book, or someone else’s, for TFF, please do! The more audio books we have on the site, the merrier!
